  RESEARCH
FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE

The Straub Foundation's research program benefits the Hawaii medical community. It involves collaboration with physicians, medical researchers, investigators, statisticians, computer programmers and support staff to help provide the necessary assistance to conduct meaningful research. The Foundation works with the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, the Department of Health and HMSA, the leading health insurance institution in Hawaii. Focusing on clinical research and pharmaceutical trials, the majority of projects involve patients in studies and experiments intended to result in better and more effective ways of managing the ever changing health care needs of the community.

Competitive Grants Research Program
As a public charity, the Foundation annually allocates limited resources for clinical research. Under the guidance of principal investigators from the community, the Foundation conducts projects that seek to improve the quality of health care in Hawaii. The Foundation has a special interest in projects, which address the costs of health care. Principal Investigators have included physicians, nurses, other health care professionals and advanced students in the health professions.

Clinical Research
The Foundation focuses its research on ashtma, orthopedics and venous disease, in addition to other areas of interest.  It has a leading international position in research on venous disease, such as the pioneering leadership in research of travel related DVT (deep vein thrombosis.)

Summer Student Research Program
Since 1986, more than 200 students interested in a career in medicine, have participated in the competitive 8-week Summer Student Research Program. By becoming a member of the research team and through structured curricula, the student is exposed to clinical research and the practice of medicine.

Research Fellowship Program
The Research Fellowship Program provides post-resident physicians the opportunity to engage in the integration of clinical research with the practice of clinical medicine. This program is very important and provides key staffing to support the Foundation's ongoing clinical research projects. Since 1990, we have supported a total of ten fellows in vascular and orthopedics.
