  SUMMER STUDENT
RESEARCH PROGRAM
Since 1986, over 200 highly motivated students interested in a career in medicine, from prestigious universities nation-wide, have completed the intensive 8-week Summer Student Research Program.  Students are assigned an independent research project under the guidance of a principal investigator, usually a physician in the community, and experience an invaluable introduction to the real world of medical practice and clinical research.

Formal Curriculum

CAREERS IN MEDICINE
Students have the opportunity to meet physicians of different specialties. The purpose is to help the students understand the challenges that such a career presents and the variety of opportunities available in health care.
LIFE CYCLE OF RESEARCH
Guest speakers present issues in the “life cycle” of research – idea generation, design, ethical considerations, funding, statistical analysis and presentation of final results. The purpose is to help the students understand how their individual activities on a project over the summer fit into a broader picture, as well as some of the important issues in conducting research.

TOURS
Research Scholars visit health care facilities and experience “behind the scenes” look at medicine.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES
Throughout the 8-week period, students (on their own time) have the opportunity to take part in optional activities such as "going on rounds at the hospital" and viewing surgical procedures in the O.R.
